I’d say the bigger story here is the evolution of visual expression as a singular, widely-accepted communication mechanism. It’s also a great way for people to claim “ownership” of a product, represented by an image, to showcase their personalities in vivid, shareable color instead of simply a line-item on a profile page.
Pinterest is a living profile of each user who joins.
