Eventually she met Alexey Brodovitch, the art director of Harper’s Bazaar, and enrolled in his design lab class. Brodovitch invited her to join him as his assistant at Harper’s. In 1945, when Junior Bazaar debuted, she became co-art director with Brodovitch.” One of my favorite photographers of all time, the effortless elegance of her work was just breathtaking. RIP Lillian.

From the absence of the Chase Building and bulky office blocks on Water Street, and with all those working piers, it must be from no later than the late 50s. Artists would have had lofts in the old buildings along Pearl Street; the El curled around the feet of the towers, cigarette smoke through the offices. I love how, by night, the markers of eras vanish between the lights, how recent and fast this feels. None of which occurred to me when I bought the card. I liked it because it looked like Starry Night. A study in scale

Lee, AP bureau chief in Seoul, were granted unprecedented access to parts of North Korea as part of the AP’s efforts to expand coverage of the isolated communist nation. The pair made visits to familiar sites accompanied by government minders, and were also allowed to travel into the countryside accompanied by North Korean journalists instead of government officials.
